Will all of the scrutiny currently being directed at terrestrial data centers, maybe space is the way to go? An article in Axios this week highlights efforts by a variety of well-known and never-heard-of entities who are seeking to deploy orbital data centers. From the former category are SpaceX (which has already filed an application with the FCC to launch a million satellites), and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin (seeking to launch 50,000 satellites). Of the lesser-known companies Starcloud and Cowboy Space Corp. are in the mix. The article mentions a research report on the matter from JLL in which it says that satellite data centers are especially well suited for energy intensive, but less urgent tasks. Stay tuned.
