Members of the Senate Communications & Technology Committee unanimously passed two cybersecurity bills earlier this week in the form of Senate Bills 745 and 824. Sponsored by Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York), SB 745 requires that any state government purchase of computer hardware meets National Institute of Standards and Technology Standards and best practices for security. Senate Bill 824 amends the Breach of Personal Information Act by requiring businesses and organizations to notify the Pa Attorney General when a data breach impacts more than 500 individuals. The bill is prime sponsored by the respective Chairs of the committee, Senators Tracy Pennycuick (R-Montgomery) and Jimmy Dillon (D-Philadelphia).
