Legislature: 9-5-25

Saying (in a co-sponsor memo) that data centers are a “vital component of our technological, AI driven world” which also “consume an enormous amount of energy”, Representative Rob Matzie (D-Beaver) introduced legislation yesterday directing the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to promulgate temporary (and eventually permanent) regulations to oversee data center operations. House Bill 1834 includes provisions implicating other public utilities; specifically minimum contract terms between data centers and other utilities and tracking all utility costs to serve the centers. HB 1834 has been referred to the House Energy Committee for its consideration.
